Reuse-Recycle-Repeat

In a short term and long term, we can save natural resources, save energy, lessen the amount of greenhouse gases, and keeps the environment clean. The purpose of this project is for people to start recycling and knowing what recycling can do for the environment. I see that UIC has recycle bins inside buildings but sometimes paper is just thrown away, left inside a classroom, or just thrown outside on the floor. Tons of paper are used every year and to save on the usage, we can recycle. Recycling can save trees and other natural resources. In a short article, it states that “recycling 1 ton of paper can save 17 trees, 7000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space, and 4000 kilowatts of energy.” (West, Larry. “Why Recycle Paper?”) In another article, paper being recycled “requires less energy to create than to produce paper from trees.” (“Why Recycle Paper?”) These two sources help stress the fact that recycle can help not only the environment at UIC but also the world if people begin to recycle everywhere. Less stuff would end up in garbage dumps where it continues to stack higher and higher. It wouldn’t cost much to continue to push this forward and to raise more awareness of how much recycling can change the environment.

Estimated cost: $5,000

  1. Not a bad idea. I see your point and reason why recycling paper is good for the environment. My only problem is how would you collect that paper to recycle. Would you make a special bin for people to throw paper in for recycling purposes, or would you come up with something different?

  2. This is a simple idea (which is great). Ideally, I wouldn’t say recycling paper is the problem but more of it is lacking an incentive because I believe that some people choose to be lazy about where they throw their trash, how can we change that?
