  1. I would define Social Sustainability as the aspect of a society to work together without conflict, treating each other with as equal members despite race, religious beliefs, economic class, or national origins. Recreating green environments to both nature and human sustainability to combat the negative impacts of industrialized environments.

  2. Social Sustainability could be described as the cooperation and interaction among individuals and communities. There is equity among the community with everyone having access to the same basic needs and opportunities. The ultimate goal being able to live in a harmonized environment.

  3. I would define social sustainability as the equal effort put forth by members of the community to achieve a positive environment physically and emotionally. This can be achieved by furthering Agenda 21, in which it states, “appropriate technology, transport reform, and urban renewal.” With these improvements a community is taking step in the right direction.

  4. To me, social sustainability means having a community where people are aware of their everyday habits and how they affect the environments. It also means that all of the citizens have access to basic everyday things such as adequate food, water and transportation, in order to be sustainable. The reading defines social sustainability as having a community that meets the diverse needs of existing and future residents, is sensitive to their environment and contributes to the quality of life.

  5. Social sustainability can be considered a generalized concept involving a combination of different ideas and processes. Depending on certain perspectives, urban social sustainability can take on a variety of meanings; however, many main concepts are shared as common themes among different viewpoints. According to Dempsey, et al., the main dimensions within urban sustainability can be boiled to social equity and sustainability of community. More specifically, a balance between maintaining political concerns and a notion of social justice, and continued viability and health within a community is necessary to socially sustain a neighborhood (Dempsey, et al., 2009). When comparing and contrasting different perspectives on social sustainability, findings have shown significant similarities between the definitions of ‘social sustainability’ stemming from viewpoints of urban development and company and products. In fact, both realms agreed upon the importance of health, education, security, safety, governance and public involvement, and equal opportunities as main contributors to social sustainability (Weingaertner & Moberg). All in all, a variety of concepts within that of sustainability can be agreed upon as relevant contributors to social sustainability. One of the biggest challenges in attempting to achieve the greatest level of social sustainability lies within balancing the importance of social sustainability against the needs of economic and environmental sustainability.

  6. I would define social sustainability using the 3 “e”s, economic, environment, and equity. Social sustainability is a community working together where everyone is equal and where everyone can feel like they are part of the community. People work together to create a better environment without having issues.

  7. I would define social sustainability as meeting the demands of the whole population and not just a particular section. In the article “Exploring Social Sustainability:Learning from perspectives on Urban Development and Companies and Products” it states that there is no blueprint to follow social sustainability, and this could be because every community requires different things. There should be equality overall and both the needs of the community along with the needs of the environment should be met.

  8. Social sustainability is that preservation of nature and the environment through the uprising of oppressed peoples. It is a combination embracing cultural identity, implementing educational resources into impoverished nations/communities, as well as getting participation from community residents. A way social sustainability can have a huge impact on the city of Chicago is by adding community gardens and green space to low-income communities. They would not only encourage residents to interact with one another, but also make affordable fresh food available to them.

Social sustainability encompasses a lot of things, examples of these are Social Equity, Social Interaction/Social Networks in the Community and many more.

  11. social sustainability, in my terms, would be to use the public as a form of help to help this earth. with so much conflict going between people and nations, its hard for us to come together and make a difference. Yes we have different languages, religions, and lives but we all share the same earth. Using the term term social sustainability we combine the social ,with the economy, and our environment to make our world a bit more sustainable to live on.

  12. I would define social sustainability as one big hub on how people should be treated fairly. Within the hub there are many different sectors: One example from the “Exploring Social Sustainability” article is Equal Opportunities within workplaces. Having an equilibrium in work environment between every worker is crucial on how successful individuals are; resources they can afford, benefits their work provides, job training, etc.

  13. The idea of social sustainability is the concept of a long lasting system that can be provided for and the ability to be upgraded with new developments. It is constantly working within it self to make sure the system is maintained. As well as, a focus on the environment using resources that are renewable to help maintain itself. The reading Economic, Social, and Environmental Sustainability in Development Theory and Urban Planning Practice describes social sustainability as environmental empowerment and creates accessibility with an overarching theme on the social construct. In the another one of the readings, The Social Dimension of Sustainable Development talks about engagement from the community and human interaction that is more broad. Saying that this has more benefits because it can provide various forms of growth.

  14. I would define social sustainability using the three words environment, economic, equality. Social sustainability is partnership and communication among people in a community. In Exploring Social Sustainability: Learning from perspectives on Urban Development and Companies and Products, it talks about the importance of social capital and human capital. In People of color environmentalism, it talks about the needs of equity for all people.

  15. Social sustainability is a very large aspect when it comes to urban environments. I would say it is a way to bring together our cultures and maintain a positive relationship between them for an efficient, clean and smart city. Also, it is a process of ensuring everyone in a community is able to access the same benefits and maintenance for their families. Education and careers should have more accessibility for individuals willing to put in effort for them and not just those that can pay for it.

  16. Social responsibility is an ethical framework and suggests that an entity, be it an organization or individual, has an obligation to act for the benefit of society at large. Social responsibility is a duty every individual has to perform so as to maintain a balance between the economy and the ecosystems.

  17. Social sustainability can be seen as a dynamic phenomenon as opposed to static one. Social sustainability has a direct relationship with a given social context and it is noteworthy that social contexts are constantly changing. Given the evolutionary dynamic of social context, communities and societies, social sustainability too becomes a constantly evolving aspect. For instance the scope of social sustainability in countries like USA is more likely to focus on the provision of healthy facilities in close proximity etc, however in worn torn countries these scope expand as basic shelter, provision of water, clothes and food are the urgent needs of the context.

  18. Social sustainability is narrowed down to a community scale, at least in European policy making. In a sustainable community, all the diverse needs of residents and future residents, are sensitive to the environment, and contribute to a high quality of life. Additionally, the social system of the community has influence over economic, environmental, and political sustainability and these factors are always adjusted to the social needs of the community. Social sustainability is the most dynamic and powerful factor of sustainability, and is the first notion to consider when creating a tailor made sustainable system for a community. It considers building strong and more frequent social networks, the physical and mental health of communities, economic stability for residents, and the overall health of their environment. Another goal of a community focus on social sustainability is to provide sufficient needs for differentiating communities to move closer to social equity and make sustainable living not just a life of the privileged.

  19. I would define social sustainability as the ability for communities to work together and create an environment that can sustain and reproduce itself at an efficient level of function. As the reading states, there are 5 dimensions to community sustainability: social interaction, participation in the community, community stability, pride, and the safety of an area.

  21. To me social sustainability is ability for communities to further develop to meet the needs of the people, environment, and the future generation. Social sustainability is a broad subject and doesn’t have an concrete definition. In one the readings it says that it “that there is no single blueprint definition to social sustainability”. However, we can conclude that the overall goal of social sustainability is to create a quality environment/ community with the appropriate tools and resources to support peoples needs.
