  1. We should care about urban social sustainability because without it our communities and our nation will decline so rapidly that we may never be able to recover. With all the racism and hate in the world, your own community should be one that you want to live in peace with others around you. Theory differs from practice because getting an entire community onboard with one singular idea is almost impossible unless there is compensation for those who do not want to participate or do not agree with the plan. As a community you don’t need to bribe certain members to conform but we must try and mitigate the needs and wants of everyone into a single idea/action.

  2. We should care about urban social sustainability because it is the best way to the make American cities more sustainable and preserve the environment. Planning is important because it allows planners to put policies in place that can help the environment, but it is equally as important to inform residents and have them practice sustainable habits at home. Often times, communities have the same wants and needs but they aren’t very communicative. By connecting citizens, the impact they can make regarding sustainability can be much more powerful.

  3. Urban social sustainability matters now more than ever as wealth becomes more unevenly distributed, many urban neighborhoods persist as racially and socio-economically segregated, and as the world population continues to become more and more urban. Urban social sustainability has gained recognition as an integral part of the planning process relatively recently, given that environmental and economic sustainability has historically overshadowed the importance of social sustainability. Even though, formulating policies and practices that facilitate urban social sustainability has persisted as a challenge for many planners.

  4. We should care about urban social sustainability because the point of social sustainability is getting the community involved to work together to create a better environment. If there isn’t urban social sustainability, it can lead to a downfall of many communities and it doesn’t help improve the environment. Theory is different from practices because there is no way to gather everyone involved with one particular idea. Being a community means you work together with other people and you have the right to give your opinion. A community being formed allows everyone to have a chance to get involved.

  5. Urban social sustainability applies to us all as we are placed in social situations and the need for improvement rises. We have and will continue to experience the negative impacts that we (humans) have caused ourselves. Therefore it is important to care and be mindful of how this can affect us. Theory could differ from the planning practice because social sustainability likely ensures equal opportunity and communication between communities, rather than just implementing practices.

  6. The reason to care about social sustainability is that the system in the long run will benefit all of us in various areas. It is a system that adapts to problems and provides more. With the current problems of a crumbling infrastructure, social sustainability would help provide a more adaptable system and long lasting one. The ideas from theory differs from practice due to context of the areas that need different resources. theory and practice will always be different to some point because theory is ideal but we’ll never know ho something works until it is in practice. As well as, human error plays a little bit into the action stage.

  7. In order for our communities to be successful we need to be more aware of social sustainability. I believe a huge theme around social sustainability is not ignoring the fact that there are a lot of social barriers for a overall sustainable community. For example, segregation is a common barrier, and this barrier doesn’t just take place verbally, but strategically in our cities. It is common for lower class communities to be gentrified or ignored when it comes to urban improvement. The planning practice involves more opportunities for minorities, and providing long-term solutions for lack of social consideration. A good example that isn’t thought of a lot is the common 40 hour work week for Americans. Also, it is common for these jobs to even extend towards your private life and a lot of these jobs aren’t a sufficient income compared to the expenses of common urban living practices. Some countries in Europe have reformed this practice to 35 hours a week allowing much more time for living and have actually witnessed increase in overall productivity and GDP. Select European countries are also responsible for making college more valuable and affordable in respect to career selection. These practices allow for more mentorships and hands on experience in the desired career choice. I believe these are good examples of social sustainability in the workplace and a practice for urban planning. We should care because it will make our communities more connected, successful and have a better quality of life.

It is not only just a matter of public health safety, but also of taking care of the earth’s natural environment. The theory differs from planning practices, as people often recognize that global warming is an issue and that it is important to care for your surroundings, but convenience many times takes over that feeling. It is more affordable and conveneient to feed a family of 5 with a diet from Mcdonalds, rather than to go to the grocery store and buy fresh foods. It really is a socioeconomic matter.

  9. We should care about social sustainability because you can’t have a sustainable city without it. It is just as necessary to look at the social issues within a city as the physical part of a city. Theory is different from planning because it looks at a wider view and the community as a whole while planning mainly focuses on taking action and at times will not benefit the whole community.

  10. We should care about urban social sustainability because it encompasses the environment, equity, and economics which is very important to a growing population and growing cities. It insures the health of the public and the preservation of nature. The theory differs from planning practices because there might be opposition from people who do not believe in the cause or might want compensation for cooperation because not everyone can get onboard with a singular thought.

  11. We should very much care about the urban perspective of social sustainability because as cities around the world start to grow we create more of a dangerous environment to live in. Cities create pollution, waste, and a disgusting feeling to live on if not properly maintain, as many tend to populate the area. Ignoring these factors urbanized cities would not be able to prosper causing more conflict and damage to the environments that other people and animals naturally inhabit. This is why we shouldn’t be ignorant when it comes to topics like these.

It’s important to care about urban social sustainability because necessary actions need to be taken when it comes to developing a neighborhood and also bringing new changes in hopes of achieving a sustainable environment and community. This theory is different from planning practice because it incorporate many other factors not just planning but social interaction, social equity, and maintaining an Eco-friendly environment.

  13. We should care about urban social sustainability due to the fact that this will help the United states become sustainable. Theory differs from the planning practice because theory looks at how an idea can benefit everybody. While in practice this will be rather a difficult task to do because not everybody will benefit from this practice.

Planning often does not consider what is best for ALL people. Social sustainability should be cared about in urban areas because it is essentially how society works together to create ways to continue improving for future purposes.

  16. Data suggests that we are 80% urbanized and more and more of the world’s population is expected to transition into urban settings. As majority of the world population starts to move into urban settings and begins to urbanize, urban metropolis become beacons of social sustainability as any small measure taken will yield larger results. Social sustainability can be viewed differently then social equity, while social sustainability can be viewed as a dynamic phenomenon that evolves with contextual needs and changes, social equity calls for the basic human rights to be met. While social sustainability calls for improving, social equity considers equal treatment of all humans regardless of race, sexuality, age, and gender.

  17. Urban social sustainability is closely linked with intangible aspects of human life, which strive to improve the quality of human life. In addition, social sustainability is also closely linked with social equity. Planning practice theory on the other hand related to more tangible aspects of human life. Since the world is 80% urbanized, meaning that majority of humans live in urban settings, measures taken in urban setting have the power to impact a greater population.
A recent event that can be seen through the lenses of social sustainability in urban context can be the Women’s March of January 21 2017. The march aimed to oppose political positions and stated it’s goal to be “Protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families – recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our country”, note that the aspects indicated in the goal of the march are related directly to the goals of social sustainability. What highlights the important role of urban context in relation to social sustainability is that the march took flagship in Washington, D.C but soon became a worldwide march with 408 marches reported to have been planned in the U.S. and 168 in 81 other countries.

As the population of urban cities become more dense, the cost of a healthy lifestyle will increase, more urban dwellers will be exposed to pollution and filth, and eventually the urban environment could be unlivable. If we can create a city where communities can provide for a local basis, there is less need to purchase resources outside of the city since neighborhoods are sustaining themselves. Communities can become adaptive to their own needs and ultimately shape the idea of a self-sufficient city. Without planning practice, there is no physical examples that include the needs of all residents that can inspire the theory of sustainability.

  19. For urban sustainability to happen, we need social sustainability in order to become efficient in all aspects, agreeing upon ideas for both society and nature itself. The theory differs since not only social aspect are focused but focusing on all aspects, which include nature, the efficiency of space, family/ community values instead of individuals, even economic playing field effectively eliminating class status, education etc. Focusing resources on the necessities needed.

  20. We should care about urban social sustainability because an urban area is home to many different cultures, different races, and different ideals. There needs to be an agreement in a community in order for a society to become efficient and work together for the betterment of their urban environment.

  21. Urban social sustainability should be cared for because the reason why we to to revitalize and maintain a community is for the people who live there. Social sustainability goes further than the planning practice; it is known as an “add-on”. We are social creatures and the social aspect is essential because through diversity, we see communities thrive differently.

  22. We should care about urban social sustainability because it focuses on the people and different social issues. Its very specific and covers a large ranger issues. Planning doesn’t always consider all people and more generalized. We need to build stronger and more harmonized communities so that it can function more adequately.
