Fall 2016 Group Project

Students will be assigned to small working groups to create an Urban Sustainability Awareness Video (USAV.) The USAV video will be approximately 5-6 minutes long. The video can be a commercial, news report, or Powerpoint video (with voiceover). Other suggestions will need approval in advance by the professor. A list of 16 urban sustainability topic areas will help guide your choices. Each student will identify three potential ideas/themes within these broader topic areas. The groups will be assigned based on topic area preferences. The students will then work individually on an identified area of interest and share with the group. The group will then need to come to a consensus on the final topic/theme/idea and direction of the video.

The purpose of the USAV video is to provide an educational tool that promotes awareness of urban sustainability challenges, policies, and potential solutions.

Keep in mind that the intended audience of a USAV is the general population. Keep the USAV appropriate for the audience type. If you wish to direct your USAV towards a certain audience (elementary-level kids, college students, older generation, etc.), you must get approval from the professor first.

REMINDER – Use the US 130 Research Guide created by UIC Librarian David Dror for finding and sourcing material for your projects.

Please be extremely careful about sourcing your research material and what is included in your USAV video. You must document all sources. If quoting, make sure it is explicitly stated. Be mindful of copyright permissions in text, images, and audio. Plagiarism is a serious offense and it will not be taken lightly in this class. If it’s on YouTube and flagged for copyright infringement, you automatically fail. YouTube has specific guidelines on what’s permissible and legal.

If you have any further questions about what constitutes as plagiarism, just ask.
