Lucia Whalen

Lucia+WhalenLucia Whalen is a senior at the University of Illinois at Chicago studying English with a concentration in Creative Nonfiction Writing and Psychology.

In the fall of 2015, Lucia was selected to attend the Climate Reality Leadership Conference, where she was trained by former Vice President Al Gore and the Climate Reality Project to serve as a Climate Reality Leader. Since then, Lucia has presented Climate Reality Presentations in college classrooms, been a part of climate rallies in the city of Chicago, and has joined a fellow Climate Reality Leader in developing the climate news media outlet Climate Conscious.

Lucia’s interest in the sustainability movement was initially sparked by experiences volunteering for Green Festivals and watching documentaries, which moved her to change many of her personal lifestyle decisions. Since attending UIC, her interests have shifted towards changes necessary in the political and institutional spheres in order to move the world in a sustainable direction.

Lucia previously worked as an intern for the UIC Heritage Garden, as well as for the UIC Office of Sustainability, where she developed a battery and pen recycling program for the University’s campus. Lucia currently serves as a Student Leader for the fall 2016 Office of Sustainability internship.
